Janusz Tytman, born on the 08th January in Wroclaw, plays mainly mandolin but also mandocello, bouzouky, tenor banjo and guitar. He started his career playing guitar at the age of twenty-one with a university blues band. Since then his way of playing has been inspired by the three famous mandolin players David Grisman , Mike Marshall and Sam Bush . He was the winner of the voting of the audience at the Gigancy Country Festival in 1997. He was the instrumentalist of the year 2000 at the Crock Country Festival, and again in 2002, elected by the readers of the magazine “Dylizans”.

In 1981 he founded the bluegrass band “Country Road” with Krzysztof Wronski (guitar, vocals) and Michal Karczewski (banjo). In the beginning they performed in the streets of Warsaw, later for the striking students. Janusz’ tour debut was at the 1st Country Piknik in Jelena Gora in 1982. For eight years “Country Road” performed at all main country events in Poland. (e.g. Picnic Country in Mrongowo with stars like Tomasz Szwed and Lonstar). In 1986 “Country Road” represented Poland at the PORTA-festival in Chechoslowakia, and in 1987 at the Euro Country Music Masters in Tilburg (Netherlands).

At the end of the 90s, Janusz started a partnership with the guitarist Jacek Wasowski. With Edek Górecki (doublebass) they formed “New Acoustic Unit”. Tadeusz Bak (guitar) and Tadeusz Melon (violin) joined the group later.
The Unit, whose music varied between folk, blues, swing and rock, performed mainly at jazz events in Poland, Germany and France . In 1993, the Unit recorded its debut record called “Reflexologie” with
Mandolin - Janusz
Bass guitar - Darek Szymanczak
Violin - Marek Wierzchucki
Percussion - Piotr Iwicki
Drums - Janusz Staszek and
Flute - Pawel Iwaszkiewicz
The Unit stopped performing right after having recorded “Reflexologie”. A second try in 1995 with Olo Walicki (doublebass) wasn’t continued. Though the music of New Acoustic Unit was very much appreciated by the audience and the press, the group didn’t make the breakthrough. The late releasing date of “Reflexologie”, two years after its recording, is certainly a reason for this fact.

In 1992, Janusz replaced the mandolinist Irek Rudnicki in the bluegrass band „Little Maggie”. With that change the group started to be more inclined to newgrass, a music more elaborated in rhythm and harmonies. Little Maggie adapted songs of “Newgrass Revival” and The Beatles, but also performed their own originals. The musicians of “Little Maggie” were
Janusz – mandolin
Czarek Makiewicz – lead vocal, guitar
Pior Bulas – banjo
Edek Górecki – bass, vocals
The group was performing for many years at the most various national and international country events.

In the 90s, Janusz steadily extended his musical spectrum. Due to his mandolin mastery as well as his ability to play tenor banjo, mandocello and bouzuki, he was asked to perform with the greatest stars of the Polish show business like Maryla Rodowicz, Szwagierkolaska and Tomasz Szwed. Janusz’ and Tomeks “journey through the music” has lasted intermittently for the last 20 years and is still going on. The hundreds of concerts they gave together are hopefully to be followed by some hundreds more. Actually, the members of the group around Tomasz Szwed are
Janusz – mandolin and his other instruments
Krzysztof Gablonski – guitar, vocals
Adam Szuraj - percussion
Jacek Szafraniec - bass

„Slawa wie Slawa“ is the most recent project of Janusz, Wiesek Orlowski, Adam Szuraj and Jacek Szafraniec. Their songs offer a spectrum from blues, country to folk ballades including even Caribbean rhythms.

During the twenty years of his career Janusz has been recording with musicians like Grzegorz Ciechowski, Maryla Rodowicz, Krzysztof Krawczyk, Wanda Kwietniewska, T-Love, Szwagierkolaska, Waldemar Kazanecki, Marek Torzewski, Lonstar and the american singer Gary Taylor. He had the pleasure to perform with (among others) Krystyna Pronko, Andrzej Rosiewicz, Tadeusz Wozniak, Emilian Kaminski and the harp master Charly McCoy..

At the Mrongowo Country Picnic in 2002, Janusz was invited to do the music direction of “Night Train to Memphis”, a music show based on the scenario of Maciek Swiatek. That performance was selected as “Event of the year” by “Dylizans” magazine’s reading public
